  • Colander for draining potatoes
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • - Cutting board and knife

Ingredients

  • For the Mashed Potatoes:
  • 2 pounds Yukon Gold potatoes peeled and cubed
  • 1/2 cup whole milk or heavy cream
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • For the Ground Beef and Gravy:
  • 1 pound ground beef 80/20 blend
  • 1 medium onion diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil if needed

Instructions

  • Place the cubed potatoes in a large saucepan and cover with cold water. Add 1 teaspoon of salt and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Cook for 15-20 minutes until fork-tender.
  • While potatoes cook, heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it apart with a spoon, until browned and cooked through, about 6-8 minutes.
  • Add the diced onion to the beef and cook for 3-4 minutes until softened. Add minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  • Sprinkle the flour over the beef mixture and stir to combine. Cook for 1-2 minutes to eliminate the raw flour taste.
  • Gradually add the beef broth while stirring constantly to prevent lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce and thyme, then bring to a simmer.
  • Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer the Ground Beef and Gravy Over Mashed Potatoes Recipe mixture for 10-15 minutes until the gravy thickens. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Drain the cooked potatoes and return them to the saucepan. Add butter and milk, then mash until smooth and creamy. Season with salt and pepper.
  • Serve the mashed potatoes in bowls and top generously with the ground beef and gravy mixture.

Notes

For the best Ground Beef and Gravy Over Mashed Potatoes Recipe results, use 80/20 ground beef for optimal flavor and texture. The fat content helps create a richer gravy base. Yukon Gold potatoes work best for mashing due to their creamy texture, but Russet potatoes can be substituted if preferred. Always add the broth gradually to prevent lumpy gravy, and don't skip the flour cooking step as it prevents a raw flour taste in the finished dish.
